Another wild rose from Broughton woods. This is the more usual colour, a much richer pink with a yellow centre.

Blackthorns grow well around Broughton. The set-aside fields have some fine specimens in the hedgerows.

2004 has been an excellent year for blackthorn fruit and there is a heavy harvest. In September, I recognised a blackbird that visits our garden eating sloe berries in the hedgerows along side the fields.

Speedwell, clover and silverweed. Silverweed changes colour through out the year and is more silver looking in spring and autumn. The flower is very like a buttercup.

Speedwell grows in profusion in some parts of Broughton woods. In old times, the sight of it was said to speed the traveler on his way.

Stitchwort is a delicate and pretty flower of early summer. Always a welcome sight.

Willowherb in late autumn - there is a huge bank of these in Broughton woods. The leaves turn bright red in autumn.

Wood sorrel - the leaves contain oxalic acid and taste quite like apple peel. Don't eat too much of it.

Yellow flag foliage - with the sun shining through it, the effect was striking.

Yellow periwinkle - the first time I'd seen a yellow periwinkle. The flower is a little larger than the red/orange type.
