Garden Software Review - Deeproot Plant Base Encyclopedia

Our personal review of Deeproot PlantBase Plant Encyclopedia

Installation and first view

Easy download and install - the 15 day trial is great to see what you are getting. Straight forward install with no problems and a familiar Windows interface. Good interface, no clutter.

Usability

We found it simple and straight forward to use.

Because it is focused on specifics, we noticed that there was none of the 'fighting with the software' that can come with some software that does not have as much care or attention given to it.

For example, I've seen so called 3D garden design software that leaves objects like windows hanging in mid air! There is none of that with Plant Base, it aims to be a garden plant encyclopedia and it does it very well.

The lack of clutter and focus on functionality shows and it 'does what it says on the box'.

Problems?

No problems on our test computer and the software performed very well.

Features Summary

  • An excellent number of plant records - and good number of photos that are clear, attractive, informative and of a good size.

  • Search functions are easy to use, and there is enough flexibility in the product to allow for beginners and more advanced users to be able to get good range of use.
Lots of ways to search and filter for plant finding, and just double clicking one of the search results opens up a plant information page with details.
Miranda particularly liked the search function for it's ease of use.

  • The fact that you can edit all the information, add synonyms and as many photos as you like makes this a great resource for students and gardening professionals alike.

  • The ability add links to resources like web sites and other documents makes it easy to add reference materials.

  • Free support means you can get advice on the best ways to customise the encyclopedia database, and if you have particular needs, Geoff from Deeproot software is more than happy to discuss supplying you with a database to suit your exact needs.

Summary

We like it, and can see that it has lots of potential uses for both gardening beginners and professionals.

Whilst there are lots of online plant databases, we like having a resource that sits on our computer and is not dependant on internet access. Deeproot have a free searchable online database, but to get the full use out of Plant Base, we think it is well worth downloading a version to install and run from home.

Deeproot have plans for new features and the offer of free upgrades makes it an even more attractive proposition.

Special notes

If I was to try and think of advice in using the encyclopedia, it would to make sure you clear all the search options when you begin a new search so you don't filter results by mistake, and  if you are creating a special personal database - remember to make a back-up on a portable drive in case anything happens to your main computer (like dropping it!).
