Garden Software Review - Complete Gardens Plant Finder & Pruning Guide

Our personal review of Complete Gardens Plant Finder & Pruning Guide

Installation and first view

Installation is not needed as you can run the plant finder and pruning guide from the disk.

Usability

We found it straight forward to use, the interface is designed using Adobe Flash and has been created as an interactive guide rather than a traditional Windows programme. Once you do some exploring, the drag selectors and other search settings are obvious.

Problems?

No problems on our test computer and the software performed well. We tested on PC but Complete Gardens is also Mac compatible.

Features Summary

  • Very good range of plants and excellent photographs.

  • We like the fact that Complete Gardens plant finder is a product that has been developed in the UK and concentrates on plants suitable for the UK climate, but think it would be useful where-ever you are.

  • The pruning guides are a valuable addition and there are also articles and info on pests and diseases.

  • Free email and phone support is great, and there is also a forum where you can ask questions or post your own photos.

  • The search functions give you many ways of finding the right plants.

Summary

We like it, the photographic quality is excellent and there is a vast amount of in-depth information covering many aspects of gardening.

We also like that it is on a disc that you have access to whenever you like, no problems with trying to find information when you want.

A very useful tool and suitable for all levels of gardeners.

Special notes

If I was to try and think of advice in using the plant finder, it would be to take care in how many search options you include - start off simply, then explore from there. Don't be afraid to explore the menus and options, there is a lot of information tucked inside.

You can create plant lists and there is a multi plant list version for business users, but if you need to add your own data and photos, consider using Complete Gardens as an additional resource, but you would need to choose a database programme that gives you control of the data.
