General description

Tuberous, low-growing, spring flowering perennial with daisy-like blue flowers. Good for early spring colour and ground cover. Also suitable for containers. Attractive to insects.

  1. Habit - spreading, with flowers held above leaves. H: up to 10cm S: up to 15cm.

  2. Stems - slender, semi-erect, slightly hairy, rounded, purplish.

  3. Leaves - rounded edges, divided into 3-5 lobed leaflets. Dark green.

  4. Flowers -  flattish, upward facing, flower, up to 5cm across, with 9-14 blue petals and yellow stamens.

Maintenance

Keep soil moist during the growing season. The plant will die back completely by summer, so be careful not to damage the tubers when digging, as it can be easy to forget about dormant plants when later things are in full flower.

Propagation

 

By division in spring, by fresh seed sown in late summer. Root cuttings can also be taken in winter. The plant may also self seed or be spread by bird-deposited seed.
